Vivo Barefoot!

The barefoot revolution is here.  A whole new line of shoes which calls itself Vivo Barefoot is now helping people rediscover the tactile experience of walking barefoot by using a super thin sole.

That’s right–Vivo Barefoot’s sole is so thin that you can roll up your shoes and put them in your pocket.  Your feet are able to read the terrain with the millions of nerve endings in the bottom of your feet.  You can literally feel the ground under your feet which gives you better balance and helps you maintain foot and spinal health.  Professional and amateur athletes have reported enhanced performance in their game because they are much more in tune with their bodies.

Shoes are traditionally very bad for us, trapping our sensitive feet inside hard shells and keeping them from any sensation.  In cultures where shoes are not worn most of the time, foot disease almost unheard of.  It may take a little time to start with, but once you’re used to walking with your body in touch with the planet at all times; you’ll wonder why it took you so long to “go barefoot.”

The Mirdle

413jr8kk2l_ss500_Oh dear.

Oh…my, my, my.

After years of suffering through support hose, girdles, push-up bras, bra inserts, high heeled shoes, and every other uncomfortable fashion innovation known to humankind, we ladies have a reason to sit back and laugh.

May I present…The Mirtle!

In a world full of hot young pop stars, sports gods, and metrosexual talkshow hosts,  many men are starting to feel…well…insecure about that beer gut.  Or, perhaps they just want to look a little more chisled but don’t have time to spend in the gym.

Thanks to the mircle of modern spandex, they can now wear these terribly uncomfortable contraptions all day under their clothes and learn to suffer for beauty in the same way that women have for years.

Of course, the real solution is for everyone to just get real and stop trying to fit themselves into a preconceived, artificial ideal of what is attractive.  But since that’s not going to happen, we can at least rest easy knowing that men are now just as miserable as we are.

Style Moment with Megan: MacBook Envelope from Etsy

I thought I’d guest post here at the Allay! blog with a style moment to start things off nice and easy: my name is Megan, and I will be contributing to Allay! on a regular basis with both Amanda and Meieli. While I’ll be taking a look at eco initiatives and women’s issues, I also secretly love to bargain shop—hence this post!

If you’ve never checked out Etsy, now’s the time to take a look. This week’s featured find is a MacBook Envelope from FernFiddleHead, which fits both the new unibody styles and the original black or white versions. A touch of cool design meets indie designer support, and for us, those are some of the best reasons to make a purchase. Since our wallets are a little bit lighter than usual, we’re also trying to save cash—and this one comes in at a reasonable $32. It’s padded with light cotton batting, and it also features a secure hemp closure to keep your goodies safe.

Now doesn’t that sound like an ideal piece to pick up for well under $50, especially if you like to carry that laptop in your oversized tote-slash-purse?

Teeth Whitening Dangers

It was inevitable.  Did anyone really not see this coming?

Scientists have determined that the in-house dental whitening treatments are dangerous because of the high levels of radiation your face is exposed to:

A separate study published this year in Photochemical & Photobiological Sciences found that UV light treatments exposed patients to four times the dose of radiation of sunbathing and that the eyes and skin are not sufficiently protected during the procedure.

Even scarier—repeated UV exposure can cause cataracts and other abnormal growths in and around the eye.   (Source:  Women’s Health)

I’m not talking about the Crest Whitestrips or the gel you buy and put in a tray overnight.  This is a procedure where you go to your dentist’s office and pay $500 to slather your teeth with chemicals and then have a supercharged UV light blasted at your face.  Who ever thought this was a good idea?  Didn’t we already determine that laying in tanning beds is a bad idea?  Why do the same thing to the super-sensitive skin in your mouth and on your face?

I’m not saying you should go around with yellow teeth.  I like my coffee as much as the next gal.  But use a safe, at-home whitening technique that doesn’t require exposing your skin to UV light.  It’ll cost a lot less, and its so much better for you.
